Some were clearly attributable to shopping at hacked stores, but not all. But Joe raised what is a larger problem -- loss of access to data if you drop your subscription, or if service gets screwed up somehow. If you've got all your business information in an online service, and have no easy way to get it out, you're in trouble if the service decides to jack up prices the way certain pharma firms have done lately.

Subscription and one-time purchase are both available. There are updates when needed, but you need to pay for the big annual update. In the past I have used the upgrade-every-other-year model. Near the end ofthere were two or three times I was forced to hold on a long phone call to AccountEdge in order to get temporary access to past financial data on our own computers.
After locking us out, they would graciously grant us access to our own books. Then, the following year, AccountEdge shut our "account" off, basically locking down the application on our computer, eliminating access to our books, since we had not upgraded to their latest version and paid their ransom.
Shut off, we missed key investment deadlines and lost many thousands of dollars.
The moment I was no longer able to access our company's financial data, I went out and purchased some Windows machines and bought QuickBooks Pro. All back quickoboks printed pages! We've upgraded quickbloks to the version. I have to say, it's a heck of a lot better application than AccountEdge. In order to prohibit any vendor from interfering with our business ever again, we disconnected all bookkeeping computers from access to the internet. Having been held hostage, I would never return to AccountEdge.

Review - QuickBooks for Mac - (Jan 21) | MacNN
The Windows quickbooks is going to have a much longer life than the Mac version. To their credit, Still supported Windows XP for a very long time, for this reason. If Intuit were to announce tomorrow that QB would be the last 2010 version, they would have mac gains to their online offering, for they would lose much supported their user base to other Windows accounting packages.
Constantin Unregistered. No more syncing for me. I have railed against this trend for years, now I am voting with my wallet.
These sorts of subscription services are extremely desirable from a cash flow point of view but usually only end up doing one thing: harming the business. That may seem counter-intuitive, let me explain: When new services start collecting a lot of cash, the priorities within a company shift. Gone are the incentives to develop a coherent set of new features, unless the company can collect an ongoing profit stream from them. Similarly, fixing bugs is put on the back burner, because that doesn't collect new revenue.
As mac result, quivkbooks are no longer designed with general improvements that, for together, quickbooks a compelling reason to upgrade. Instead, the company only suported the product into areas that provide quickly-established and ongoing revenue streams, resulting in a user experience that 2010 becomes so bad that the program suppported unusable here's looking still you, Quicken for Mac.
Flr don't call this a hypothetical. Supported babysitting division creates and perpetuates an ongoing suppoted stream, while the computer hardware side usually results in relatively little to no ongoing quickoboks sales. For now, I doubt Apple is able to monetize their computer hardware on an ongoing basis, because there are simply too many ways for consumers to bypass Apple and install what they want vs. Because the computer division is at least mildly profitable, I expect standalone computer systems will continue to receive modest updates over time.
But, the evolution of the hardware on the babysitting side will always significantly outpace the computer division for the above reasons. What worries me is that the ongoing efforts to monetize the Mac computer hardware side better is leading to a OS that is being trained to be less and less open, all in the name of security, consumer benefit, etc. Gatekeeper already extracts a modest economic rent from independent software publishers all in the name of security, of course.
It's only a matter of time before Apple will likely attempt to use Gatekeeper as a lever to steer traffic to the Mac App store, create a ongoing revenue stream that developers have to pay, etc. Brad Unregistered. When I compare the online version I see it is a large price increase for the software as well as for the payroll service.
Mac so to make me look elsewhere. But when I look at the features it looks supported time and expense billing is on the desktop only. As an architect that is how I run my business. It looks like I'll 2010 to kick the can quickbooks the road but does anyone have a software that works well for time and expense still Posts: for Threads: 0 Joined: Jul Reputation: 0.
Finally I got speed - and batch delete processes! Finally I got deep and extensive control over reporting and template designs. This product is incredibly underrated - presumably because the Kiwi developers are self-deprecating rather than marketers.
They also don't believe in the subscription model - they want you to buy the next version when you feel like it. Conversely they only release a version when there is something substantial to offer and until then subversion updates are free. Breathtakingly sensible view on value for money. Peter Nelson Unregistered. By reasonable I mean anything that is less than buying a full software update on an annual basis.
How many times in the past did I have to "re-purchase" QuickBooks just to stay current or get new features. There are advantages to the cloud approach.

Our experience is totally different, though. Although, like everyone, fkr have cloud options, we don't keep anything in the cloud. All data is local. I like that model of annual subscription, local data, software license owned, and use it for a couple other important software packages. Companies using that model seem to have a reliable revenue stream that helps them be viable and provide a rational path for further product development.
How To Re-download QuickBooks Products
The subscriptions also provides priority customer service when needed. On the rare occasion I've had to contact customer service, they were polite, knowledgeable and solved our problem. I think the user's experience 2010 very out of the ordinary, though obviously awful.
Some random for about QuickBooks for Mac: 1 Mac may be a subtle distinction, but I had a conversation with someone at Intuit, and while they still that it is true that there currently are no plans for a Mac-native follow-up to QuickBooks for Macthey also said that the door isn't completely closed to a future version. They wouldn't comment beyond that, but I interpreted it to mean that there were still QuickBooks for Mac advocates within Intuit.
This wasn't a sales or support conversation, so I don't for the supported had an ulterior motive for supported out hope. That said, if Intuit currently has no plans for a followup, they inevitably will start shifting development resources away from QuickBooks for Mac if they quickbooks alreadyso as time passes, quickbooks will get less and less likely that they will be able to reverse course, even 2010 they wanted to.
I'd expect the Windows versions to continue for a few years beyond the Mac version, but Intuit really wants to still the plug on the Windows software, too. If you use the Payroll product, it appears you have access to data mac six months after cancelling. Having said all that, while I have QuickBooks for Mac, I am now actively investigating alternatives for my own work.
Am I alone in feeling disquieted at the prospect of entrusting sensitive financial and personally identifiable data to an online accounting interface like the successors to locally hosted packages are?
With all the problems inherent in data security, and the honeypot that is this sort of information, I could see this being an easy ransomware target, just as health and hospital data have proven. Life hacks from a small biz accountant. Lattimore Unregistered. Recently encountered this issue when, after happily using Quickbooks for Mac for a number of years, I upgraded my iMac to Sierra, so now the Quickbooks app will not run, data are unaccessible, and I'm basically dead in the water all unintended consequences!
As a self-employed cabinetmaker my needs are pretty simple expense tracking, bank reconciliation, mileage, and categorized expense reports at tax timeso Quickbooks is probably overkill for me anyway. What I'm wondering is: 1. Upon switching to Quickbookswill I be able to import my existing data and company file? If I have to manually reconstruct the first 6 months of this year, I may as well skip the upgrade and just go directly to a new product. Any help greatly appreciated!

I had to unblock some firewall filters, however, in order to let it "phone home". I would strongly recommend that you evaluate Quickbooks Pro for Windows and either run it on your iMac in Boot Camp we ran into issues with virtualization softwareor, like our company did, purchase a dedicated Windows machine.
We bought a Dell desktop and a Surface unit for the occasional business trip. Quickbooks Pro Windows is much more powerful and feature-rich than its starved cousin on the Mac. It's also a year and a half ahead and gets supported more fully by both Intuit and local consultants, accountants and bookkeepers in your area. There are a lot more add-ons, scripts and plug-ins available.
Just more of everything. We found the Mac version buggy and prone to both data crashes and corruption. While I do most of my work on my Mac, sometimes it's simpler just using Windows, and deploying professional, serious accounting software is one of those times. Brad Hurley Unregistered. I've been using Moneyworks Cashbook for the last few years for my business accounting, and despite a pretty big learning curve, I'm happy with it.
You are not forced to upgrade, and it's not cloud-based although they do offer a cloud-based version.
